Our Programs

We are optimistic doers who dream of creating a global resource for Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the STEM domain and transform the current culture of teaching, learning in India.

We promote maker education and all our programs have a core feature of project-based learning or learn-by-doing enhancing ‘deep learning’ among students.

Our Programs are integrated into an interconnected and holistic approach of engagement with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).  While Tinkerers’ Lab is an entry point in our engagement with an HEI, we progressively add depth to that partnership be it through our Collaborative Classrooms, Invention Factory or our Soft skill Development Centers.

Tinkerers’ Lab

Tinkerers’ Labs are state-of-art facilities dedicated to fostering an innovative attitude among students. Here, students from various disciplines come together to make, learn and explore in individual or multi disciplinary group projects that turn concepts into real-world objects. Each TL lab is open 24/7, led by student managers, under the guidance of a couple of faculty members. The Labs are equipped with the latest desktop manufacturing equipment like 3-D printers, laser cutters, milling machines, vinyl cutters, a fully equipped electronics, section and a variety of  tools and machines necessary for any type of fabrication. Till date 9,000 students have benefited from access to four labs with six start-ups who built their first prototypes in our facilities.

Maker Bhavan

Pioneering the concept of academic maker space in India, Maker Bhavan at IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) aims to be the, first fully functional world-class academic maker space in India.

Maker Bhavan will enable IITGN to transition to a competency focused education model by embedding active learning as a core feature of the educational experience every student at IITGN.

Two active learning classrooms have already been set up in the pilot phase and a number of project-based courses initiated benefiting 450 students.

Invention Factory

Conducted in partnership with US Cooper Union Professors Alan Wolf and Eric Lima (Founders), invention factory is a seven-week intensive summer program in inventing where students from IITs across India learn to invent, work with their hands to build and test a prototype. Ten teams of two IIT students each conceive of an invention, prototype it, “pitch” it, write and file a U.S. patent application, and finally compete for prizes for the “Best Inventions.”

The program originated in the U.S. (has the U.S. trademark “Invention Factory”) and ran for the first time in India in 2018 summer at IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN). The program continued at IITGN in 2019 and will run simultaneously in IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Bombay in 2020. In two years 48 student participants from 9 IITs have participated in the Program and filed 24 provisional patent applications in India and USA.

Leadership Program

The leadership Development Program was initiated at IIT Gandhinagar in 2019 to promote hands-on practical leadership skills among students. The mix of programs is designed to service both large and small student groups. One set of programs (4-8 annually of typically 2hrs each) are targeted towards larger student audience with the objective of exposing the widest number of IITGn students to leadership skills. In addition, there are 6-10 in-depth programs (4hrs- 20hrs) annually for smaller groups of students enabling one-on-one mentoring and experiential learning. A Certificate program on leadership will soon be introduced for students who completed 40- 60 contact hours of the program.
